Melinda Cook

Melinda Cook is a nationally respected education strategist with 35 years of experience spanning classroom teaching, district leadership, and large-scale assessment strategy. As Head of Assessment Strategies at Riverside Insights, she works with districts, policymakers, and education leaders to rethink how data is used and, more importantly, how students are seen.

Melinda is a leading voice in the movement toward whole-child accountability and the use of multiple measures in education. Her work challenges the overreliance on single achievement scores and deficit-based identification practices that often misrepresent student potential, particularly for students of colour, twice-exceptional learners, and those navigating complex life circumstances. She advocates for integrating measures of ability, strengths, resilience, and life skills alongside academic outcomes to create a more accurate, human, and actionable understanding of learners.

Grounded in decades of research and real-world application, Melinda’s approach emphasises language, trust, and mindset as levers for systemic change. She believes that when schools shift from sorting students to seeing them, they unlock hope, agency, and engagement, with measurable academic, cultural, and financial impact. Her work continues to influence how districts design assessment systems, make placement decisions, and build equitable pathways that honour the complexity of every learner.
