For over three decades, LK Monroe has been a champion for equity and access in education. With a career spanning classrooms, government, and nonprofit leadership, she has dedicated her life to creating opportunities that open doors—for every student, at every stage.
Education runs in her blood. A third-generation educator, LK followed in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, stepping into the classroom after years of leading mission-driven organizations focused on youth, community, and systems change. Early in her career, she served as a legislative intern for Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm—an experience that ignited a lifelong commitment to justice and advocacy.
In 2011, she joined the Alameda County Office of Education, eventually being elected as Alameda County Superintendent of Schools in 2014. Over two terms, she led with a bold vision: positioning ACOE as a model of social justice in action. Her leadership extended statewide as president of the California County Superintendents during the pandemic, where she helped steer systems through crisis with empathy, clarity, and resolve.
Today, LK is the founder of TeamED Up for Good, a social purpose corporation that supports athletes, artists, and philanthropists committed to creating lasting impact in communities through education.
She holds a degree from USC’s Sol Price School of Public Policy, a teaching credential from Holy Names University, and completed her administrative training through the New Leaders program. She lives in Oakland and is the proud mother of two adult children.
