Superintendent of Schools for the Westbury Union Free School District
Dr. Tahira DuPree Chase holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications Arts from Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia, Master of Arts in English Education and Master of Education with a specialization in School Administration and Supervision from City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center and Mercy College, New York, respectively. In 2011, Dr. Chase earned a doctorate degree in Executive Leadership at St. John Fisher College, Rochester, New York. Her award-winning dissertation focused on instructional leadership styles that prove successful for struggling adolescent readers. Dr. Chase was selected to participate in the Women in Education Leadership Institute at Harvard University and is currently enrolled in the Diversity and Inclusion at the Workplace Certification Program at Cornell University.
Launching her career as a substitute teacher in New York City’s Department of Education, Dr. Chase has 30 years of experience as an educator. As a teacher, she expertly taught and inspired scholars at both the elementary and secondary levels. As an administrator, Dr. Chase has a proven track record for leading numerous initiatives and improving outcomes for scholars. Dr. Chase is widely known as a fierce advocate for all children. She believes every child deserves a world class education and their social/emotional needs addressed, regardless of his or her family’s economic tier, zip code, ethnicity or immigration status.
Dr. Chase led the Greenburgh Central School District in Hartsdale, New York as the Superintendent of Schools from 2014 to 2021. While Superintendent, Dr. Chase spearheaded several initiatives, including the implementation of the Professional Learning Communities as a districtwide model, installation of full-time Early Childhood Program for four-year old scholars, implementation of Mandarin Chinese as a World Language offering for students from PreKindergarten through Grade 12 and the designation of an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. While Superintendent, New York State reading and math assessment scores increased significantly. Additionally, high school graduation rates rose from 87% to 94% under her leadership.
In July of 2021, Dr. Tahira DuPree Chase was appointed to lead the Westbury Union Free School District (Old Westbury, New York) as Superintendent of Schools. Since her arrival, Dr. Chase has keenly focused her efforts on the social/emotional wellbeing of scholars and staff as well as instructional programming to address learning loss due to the pandemic. Moreover, she is working with various leadership teams within the district to restructure safety and security, streamline literacy instruction, improve communication platforms and increase course offerings for scholars. In 2022, the school district applied to become an International Baccalaureate World School and is currently in candidacy status.
In addition to transforming Westbury Union Free School District into a World Class School District, Dr. Chase is a contributing author, public speaker and consultant to Seesaw Learning, Pearson Education (Textbook Division) and McGraw-Hill Textbooks. During her tenure as an educator, Dr. Chase received numerous proclamations, citations and distinguished honors. Dr. Chase was identified as Top 25 National Superintendents to Watch as well as Top 20 Female Superintendents. Noted for her work in public education, Dr. Chase has appeared on several local and national educational panels as well as several media outlets including Areva Martin Show: The Special Report, ABC News, CBS News, CNN and USA Today. She currently is a board member of the New York State Association for Women in Administration and Voices4Equity. Moreover, Dr. Chase hosts a podcast, Strictly Education, with Dr. Tahira.
Dr. Tahira DuPree Chase is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
